You'll see a cool ad placed by the folks behind Mozilla's open-source Firefox browser and paid for by 10,000 adopters of Firefox (aka SFX, "Support Firefox"). You can download the ad as a PDF or order it as a limited-edition print. And the connection with blogging is...

Twofold. 1.) Blogs were largely responsible for spreading the word about this fundraising effort. Ten thousand Mozilla fans rallied in ten days to raise the tens of thousands of dollars it costs to buy a two-page ad in the Times. You'll need a magnifying glass to read their names, all of which appear in the ad. 2.) The Firefox browser is RSS-enabled. Meaning it knows if a site you browse to offers an RSS feed.…

British communications writer Neville Hobson challenges something I wrote recently. To wit, that "good writing" is an essential part of blogging. Not so, he says. You just need a "voice" and some personality. And then you can "have at it," as they say. I disagree. But perhaps we're talking shades of gray. You just need a "voice" and some personality. And then you can "have at it," as they say. I disagree. But perhaps we're talking shades of gray. Yes, you gotta have an interesting voice, a point of view and something to say. But no, you don't need to be a professional writer... a Hemingway or a Proust. If you've ever tried to get past the opening sentence of Proust's A La Recherche du Temps Perdu you know the guy couldn't resist showing off his grasp of syntax. Blog in shorter sentences, puhleeze. Back to the subject at hand, here's how…

For example, see post below where I riff on my new Beginner's Guide to Blogging. I've inserted tracking links behind the phrases that say visit the WordBiz store to get your complimentary copy. (Yes, you have to purchase something to get it. But it can be a minimal purchase.) And those tell me two things. 1. How many click-throughs I'm getting. 2. How many of those clicks turn into purchases. I've got the same kind of tracking links inserted behind the products displayed on debbie's blog. Proverbial wisdom (if that' s possible in the nascent blogosphere) says you can't...

sell directly through a blog. That's like saying you can't offer a special promotion through your e-newsletter.…
