Monica Guzman is a young reporter at the Seattle Post Intelligencer who was one of the few to survive the drastic cuts when the print edition was shut down in March 2009. She doesn't call herself a reporter, however. The new terminology is news gatherer and she is expected to be as adept at creating videos, Twittering, blogging (she's the main contributor to the Seattle PI's The Big Blog), public speaking and maintaining the paper's website as

Like others, I've been pondering the best way to get new business, or stay in business, in today's plummeting economy. Then it came to me: digital cupcakes. There's a coffee shop three blocks from me that sells (according to the March 2009 issue of The Atlantic), the best cupcake in America. I wander over several times a week, laptop under my arm. I order a cappuccino. They make the kind where the swirl of foam on top is perfectly patterned.

I've finally got a video up that shows me strutting the stage to give a keynote on corporate blogging. This was shot at Webcom in Montreal. A shout-out to the nice bald head (it belongs to Mitch Joel) that appears in the right-hand corner in the first few seconds. Thanks to the talented Adam Strasberg for the video editing.

Amazing how perception of who's online, who's blogging and who's using social media lags far behind the reality. If you're a marketer, are you still thinking about social media, including blogs and social networks, as channels to reach a young audience? Think again. A few touchpoints:

  • 56% of those ages 65 - 69 are now online
  • 45% of those 70 - 74 are using the Internet
