Here's a great post on Common Craft that explains the multiple differences between message boards and blogs. Scroll down to see Lee LeFever's nifty side-by-side comparison chart.

Key differences:

1) Message boards are decentralized and group run; blogs are centralized and often published by one person.

2) Responses or "comments" are required on a message board in order to create a discussion; "comments" on a blog post are optional.

3) Chronology:  blogs are always in reverse chronological order; topics and discussions on message boards can be organized and presented in different ways. Thanks to Shel Holtz for the pointer.

Blogs make a great tool for putting out the views and thoughts of the company.

Forums work well for building a community for your clients to share ideas and how to’s and also for minor support issues. Forums are an excellent way to gather super loyal customers who will really help with Word of Mouth.

Are message boards and forums the same thing, or are there nuances?

I learn Chinese language on http://www.hellomandarin.com now. I use blog and message boards together to learn everyday. You can compare between Chinese learning forum ( http://forum.hellomandarin.com ) and Chinese learning blog ( http://www.hellomandarin.com/ilovechinese/blog ). This is a very practical case to know Differences between message boards and blogs.
