Jeez, I need to get a life... or at least a Second Life. I'm way behind on this one. I honestly thought it was avatars and multiplayer games and kinda silly. (You can, er, have virtual sex.) Up until this afternoon I haven't paid any attention.
But I'm listening to Neville Hobson - in London - as he presents his social media workshop to a rapt audience at Melcrum's UK Strategic Communication Management Summit.
Neville just told us that Reuters yesterday opened up a Second Life "bureau." On the site, it says Second Life is "a 3D online digital world imagined, created and owned by its residents." So yes there's a business aspect to it. You can own property.
Reuters isn't the only mainstream organization setting up shop in Second Life. Others include Harvard University, Major League Baseball and CNET.com.

Debbie, thanks for the link to Business Communicators of Second Life!
We are holding monthly meetings - come sometime! We’ll transport you painlessly to our meeting spot. It changes every month as we talk to really interesting folks who are doing fascinating work in Second Life.
But more importantly, if not Second Life specifically, virtual worlds are an aspect of the future of the web and it is worth keeping track of it, at least.
Hope you join us!
