A just published Fortune article (quoting IBM CEO Sam Palmisano) makes the point that the 3-D virtual world of Second Life is not "eye candy" and may represent the "next phase of the Internet's evolution."
But as Alex Manchester puts it on the Melcrum blog: "... the waters are definitely still very, very muddy and I still think few senior execs that aren't in the tech industry would go for it [Second Life]." Alex, I agree.
Although... I'm increasingly convinced that something is very real about this place (I've explored Second Life briefly). For example, the equivalent of US $1 million exchanged hands inside 2L in the past 24 hours.

It seems to me (and to the rest of the crew at the Maryland Association of CPAs) that Second Life holds a lot of potential for businesses of all types. We recently created the Second Life Association of CPAs to explore those possibilities, and even our members are getting into the act; one of them has even set up shop in Second Life for his entire firm and insists he has received business leads through his contacts in Second Life. Will it go anywhere? Who knows? But if it does, we want to be ahead of the curve. Find out more by reading our blog at http://www.CPASuccess.com ... and stay tuned.

What annoys me most (among other things) is the fact that SL isn’t accessible at all for lots of people, especially but not only the blind and the visually impaired

That’s an interesting point. And even for the “computer-savvy” amongst us (ahem… I include myself in that group) there is a fairly steep learning curve to figure out how to get around, etc. inside Second Life. Maybe I’m clueless and haven’t played enough 3D games, but I’m still a newbie.
